Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is the use of Voice over IP (VoIP) to facilitate the connection of a business phone system (PBX) to the Internet. In order to take advantage of SIP trunking, your company must have a PBX, a broadband connection with an Internet service provider and a gateway that serves as the interface between the PBX and the service provider. A SIP trunk uses the Internet to replace your conventional telephone lines (trunks), while still allowing you to maintain all of your existing phone and fax numbers. SIP trunks allow your company to utilize VoIP to gain efficiencies and in most cases lower your telecommunication costs.
